​Our Contests are part of how we encourage and promote raza authors to express the narratives and needs of our communities, and receive the recognition they deserve.

​We have run our EXTRA FICTION CONTEST since 2018, judged by the father of Chicano sci-fi Ernest Hogan. See below for submission times and rules.

EXTRA FICTION CONTEST

Contest submission is free and is open for any person from or residing in the USA (of American Indian, Chicano/Mexican American, Puerto Rican, Cuban American, Dominican American, Central American, or South American origin). 

Manuscripts must be unpublished, in English, Spanish, or Ingléspañol. Put “[year]Extra-Fiction Contest” in the email subject line. Email Word format (.docx) unpublished submissions with short bio in third person in separate Word attachment and author’s photo (label your name, not author photo) to [email protected]. One submission per author, 6,000 word limit, contact us beforehand if the submission is over 6,000 words.

​Contest opens August 1st and the deadline is November 1st. Submit while you can.
(Speculative-fiction stories published in Somos en escrito during the year are considered for the contest.)

JUDGE ERNEST HOGAN

Judging the finalists is Ernest Hogan, godfather of Chicano Science-Fiction and author of Cortez on Jupiter, High Aztech, and Smoking Mirror Blues.

          PRIZES:

1st place: $100 and a copy of El Porvenir, ¡Ya!  Chicano Sci-fi Anthology.

2nd place: Copy of El Porvenir, ¡Ya!. 

3rd place: Copy of El Porvenir, ¡Ya!. 

Two Honorary Mentions.

All Finalists will have their stories published online in Somos en escrito Literary Magazine.

RAZA STORY OF THE YEAR CONTEST

Best Raza Short Story of the Year 2023:
​
We are accepting short stories published in 2023 by writers who self-identify as Raza. Only entries submitted between November 2023 and March 2024 and only by editors of literary magazines, genre magazines or journals. Stories published in anthologies, collections, etc., are not eligible. Our purpose is to build Mexican American, Chicana, Chicano, and Chicanx literature.

If you as a Raza writer have published a story or will be published by the end of 2023, ask the editor of the publication to submit to us at [email protected]. Any writers who may have published in more than one magazine may submit multiple entries but only one from each magazine. Stories may be in any genre and up to 10,000 words (flash or micro fiction is fine). The story must have been published in 2023. Please include a brief author bio.

Please put “Best Raza Short Story 2023” in the subject box of the email. We do not accept submissions from writers/authors, but the publishing editor of the magazine/journal.

JUDGE ESTELLA GONZALEZ

The 2023 judge will be ESTELLA GONZALEZ, the author of the award-winning short story collection, Chola Salvation. She has also been published by Kweli Journal, Huizache, Asteri(x) Journal, and other literary journals. ​Among numerous awards are the Cornell University's Philip Freund Prize in Creative Writing, a Pushcart Prize “Special Mention” and a “Reading Notable” for The Best American Non-Required Reading. Chola Salvation won her a Rising Star award from the annual International Latino Book Awards as well as gold medals for Best First Book and Best Short Story Collection. Estella received her B.A. in English from Northwestern University and her MFA in fiction from Cornell University. She lives in Tucson, Arizona.
