Somos Xicanas is forthcoming SPRING 2024!This forthcoming multi-genre and multi-generational creative writing anthology will illuminate both the enduring and the new Xicana identity, presence and culture. In moving and powerful poetry, memoir pieces, short stories, personal essays and vignettes, Somos Xicanas will reveal and explore the diverse ways Xicana identity impacts lifestyle, values, principles, political stances, education, anti-colonialism resistance, brown female empowerment, spirituality, relationships to ancestral knowledge, motherhood, future generations, indigenous activism, La Lucha movement, art, etc. From Cholas to Madrinas, first generation immigrants to barrio natives, “no sabo kids” to Spanglish speakers, copal-burning-temachtianis to brown-beret-wearers, etc. this book will represent a wide range of voices eager and passionate about continuing the complex and evolving, resilient Xicana narrative. Thank you for all your submissions! We were absolutely inundated with last minute submissions to this anthology! Mil gracias to all of you who poured your hearts out into your writings for this project! If you submitted your writings to Somos Xicanas, you may expect to receive a confirmation e-mail from Luz, the lead editor on this project, by November first. This winter, our staff will be carefully considering all your submissions, as we curate the anthology. It is important to us that a diverse range of voices be represented. While we don't wish to exclude anyone, the sheer volume of submissions forces us to accept only a limited number into the anthology. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we make our selections. Sometime between now and this spring you will each receive a notification of whether or not your work has been accepted into the anthology. For those whose work has been accepted, you will retain the copyrights. We look forward to working with each of the contributors as the anthology develops! If you have any further questions, please e-mail: [email protected] and write "Luz" on subject line. ~Submissions are now closed~

Is there a deadline for submissions or limit to what is submitted (e.g., selection of poems versus draft manuscript)

Is 125 word limit only for our bio or is it for both bio and our answer to why/how we identify as Chicana? Do we send all pieces in one document or separate documents in email?

Hola Somos En Escrito Editorial Board, can these subs be previously published? I saw that for the sci-fi anthology they cannot be.

Are you accepting only unpublished works? And, are bilingual pieces accepted?

I would like to submit. I understand a short bio and a paragraph about Why Chicana is requested. How long would the essay be? Am I clear that a bio, paragraph and an essay or short story is also allowed?

Thank you for your interest in sharing your writings with us, Beatrice! Yes, we request a short paragraph on why you identify as a Xicana/Chicana, and a short bio. (no more than 250 words). As far as what literary genre you decide to decide to express yourself through: we accept poetry, personal essays, short stories, memoir pieces, etc. All prose submissions, including essays, have a 25 page maximum limit (as per our senior editor's guidelines). Personally, I prefer shorter pieces. Thanks!

As an Anglo writer who grew up in Southside Whittier AKA Sunshine Acres, I just want to say I love what you're doing.

Did you submit something to the Somos Xicanas anthology, Linda? I don't see your submission. When did you send it in?
